JUST ANNOUNCED

• The Queer Voices NYC Film Festival returns to The Center from Thursday, 9/10 through Sunday, 9/13, bringing four days of LGBTQ+ films and filmmakers to the West Village.

• Doll Invasion is taking over the Fire Island Pines on Friday, 8/28, with DJs, performances and a full afternoon-to-night waterfront party. Proceeds benefit Queer|Art while helping provide free transportation to the island for trans attendees.

• INFERNO: A Transsexual Rager is bringing two nights of dance, drag, sideshow and kink to 3 Dollar Bill on Thursday, 9/17 and Friday, 9/18. It’s Dante’s Inferno reimagined as accessible trans performance art, with sliding-scale tickets and no one turned away for lack of funds.

• Slayyyter takes over Terminal 5 on Saturday, 10/3 with the Pearly Drops tour. One dollar from every ticket supports local organizations working for LGBTQ+ health, wellbeing and empowerment.

Jersey City Pride is celebrating its 26th year and its theme is “Show Your True Colors: Now More Than Ever.” The festival is free and easy to reach by PATH. Here are some highlights.

• Did you know that Sam Smith, the Grammy and Oscar-winning British pop star behind “Stay With Me” and “Unholy,” wrote parts of their new album at historic West Village gay bar Julius’? He wanted to become part of its legacy and you can grab a drink at the same spot.

• At a time when dating is app based, - a completely free, low tech version exists. Black Sapphic Meetups are being organized in Queens by Mars Motion, where all you need to bring are “your own blanket, snacks, water and good vibes”.

• A new film, Sixth Avenue Saints, directed and written by Julia Fox of Uncut Gems fame, is set in 1993 Brooklyn and downtown Manhattan. The story dives into the queer street life, piers, hustlers and outsiders of the era, and the production has been casting real New Yorkers as extras this week.

• A new documentary is out, Mineshaft: The Cruising Murders, which takes a look at Cruising, William Friedkin’s controversial 1980 film, and the real gay leather and S&M world it drew from. The Mineshaft itself was a notorious members-only BDSM and leather club in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District from 1976 to 1985.
